The Core Loop
Every mode in Boisterous Buttons! boils down to the same nerve: a grid of squares, one (or more) lit up, and a shrinking window of time to tap the right one. Tap correctly and the level ticks up — the timer usually gets a little shorter, the pressure a little higher. Miss, hesitate, or run out the clock, and the run ends. How far can you push it?
Levels & Timers
Each mode has its own starting timer and its own curve for how much time you lose per level. Most modes trim milliseconds off the clock as you climb, floor out at a bare minimum, and just keep going.
Wins vs. Endless
Some modes have a real finish line — a specific level that counts as a win, with an achievement and a leaderboard waiting on the other side. Others (Four Squares, Infinity) never end; you're only racing your own best.
Hypersquares
The in-game currency, earned by playing well and just by playing. Spend it in the Shop on buffs that change how a run feels.
Game Modes
Four start unlocked (top row). The rest open up as you push your Classic and Four Squares level records (bottom row). Each mode carries a version badge — v1 modes are settled, Beta is still being tuned, and Alpha modes are the newest and most likely to change. Release notes per version are coming soon.
Classic
v13×3 grid · phases · shrinking blocks · win at level 400
The original. A single highlighted square on a 3×3 grid, a timer that starts at 2 seconds and trims 10ms per level — resetting back up to a full 2 seconds every time a new phase begins, then settling flat once there's nothing left to trim. Classic runs through five named phases as it escalates:
- Boisterizing Buttons! — one block, the basics.
- Dual Touching! — a second block joins at level 101, timer back to a full 2 seconds.
- Touch To Shrink! — level 201 onward, blocks themselves start physically shrinking and the timer settles flat at 1 second.
- Gotta Touch 'Em All! — a third block joins at level 251, timer back to 2 seconds again, blocks shrunk down to as little as 37.5% size by level 400.
- Out Of Touch — level 351+ settles the timer flat again at 1 second, for anyone who keeps going after the win.
Milestone levels trigger on-screen fireworks. Always unlocked.
Catch Me If You Can
Alpha3×3 grid · the target won't sit still
The highlighted square relocates on its own on a timer, independent of your taps — it gets faster every level. Misclick and that cell turns purple and goes permanently dead for the rest of the run, shrinking your own board out from under you. Always unlocked.
Contamination
v13×3 grid · blocks pile up · clear level 150
Highlighted blocks accumulate instead of replacing each other — a timeout adds more without clearing what's already lit, and multiple targets can be live at once. Misclick a dead cell and it locks purple under a red countdown clock (longer the higher your level — see Mechanics below) before it can be cleared. Let the board fill up completely and the run is over. Always unlocked, and playable in multiplayer.
Tetrilicious
Beta4×5 grid · blocks fall · don't let them stack
Tetris-flavored: blocks continuously fall down their column at a constant speed and tap away before they land — an unlanded block never slows down no matter how tall the stack beneath it, only how far it still has to fall. Miss one and it settles permanently gray, narrowing that column. Multiple blocks can fall per wave at higher levels. Win at level 350; always unlocked, and playable in multiplayer.
Four Squares
Alpha2×2 grid · one block · pure speed · endless
A small, fast grid with no finish line — just how high a level you can hold onto before the clock outruns you. Unlocks at Classic level 250.
Infinity
Alpha3×3 grid · one block · no end, ever
Same board as Classic, but the level number stops mattering — Infinity is scored by how long you survive, not how high you climb. Unlocks by winning Classic (level 400).
Rule of Thumb
AlphaThumb-zone buttons · sides grow · win at level 800
Buttons split across two columns built for one-handed, thumb-only play. The count per side grows in stages — 2, 3, 4, then 5 buttons per side — cycling twice on the way to level 800. Unlocks at Four Squares level 250.
Mechanics Worth Knowing
🟣 Contamination cooldown
Tapping a wrong cell in Contamination doesn't just mark it purple — it locks it under a visible red countdown, drawn as a clock face whose purple fill sweeps away like a minute hand. The lockout length scales with your level: round the level up to the nearest ten and divide by ten. Levels 1–10 lock for 1 second, 11–20 for 2 seconds, 21–30 for 3, and so on. While it's counting down, tapping it does nothing at all — once the clock empties, the cell turns a plain, tappable purple, same glow as a real target.
🎯 The moving target
Catch Me If You Can's highlighted square hops to a new cell on its own clock, which speeds up every level. A wrong tap doesn't cost time — it permanently kills that cell instead, so the real danger is running out of board, not running out of clock.
🧱 Falling blocks, constant speed
Tetrilicious blocks always fall the same speed regardless of how full their column already is — a block landing near the top of a tall stack simply arrives sooner, it never falls any faster. Each level shaves 5ms off the base 1-second fall time, resetting back to a full second (with an extra simultaneous block) at levels 101 and 201.
🩵 Shrinking & phases
Classic layers three escalations on top of the base timer squeeze: more simultaneous blocks, physically shrinking block size (down to 37.5% by level 400), and named phase transitions that announce themselves on screen as you cross each threshold.
Buffs & Dupes
Every account starts with Time To Spare free. Everything else is bought with Hypersquares in the Shop — A rank for 1,000, S rank for 3,000. Buying a buff you already own doesn't waste the purchase — it upgrades its dupe level, up to 6 dupes deep, making its effect stronger each time. Only one buff is active per run, chosen before you start (never available in multiplayer).
Guardian Angel
Absorbs your first wrong tap completely — no penalty, no timer loss. Each dupe adds one more absorb per game — 6 at 5 dupes — then jumps to 10 absorbs per game at max dupe.
Wait A Second
Every level's timer gets a flat extension, starting at +1000ms and climbing to +2500ms at max dupe.
Hold It
Guarantees a timer floor regardless of level — never less than 2000ms, rising to a 3000ms floor at max dupe.
Who Cares?
Cuts the wrong-tap time penalty by 75%, on a 5-second cooldown between discounted misses. At max dupe the reduction hits 100% with no cooldown at all — total penalty immunity.
Gotta Run
Skips the easy part — and the easy points. Every game starts at level 51 instead of 1, pushing to level 99 at max dupe.
Time To Spare
The free starter buff. A smaller flat timer extension than Wait A Second — +250ms, growing to +400ms at max dupe.

Multiplayer
Live 2–4 player races over Game Center, no buffs allowed — pure skill against real opponents.
Pick a mode
Classic, Contamination, or Tetrilicious — every racer's board is generated from the same shared seed, so everyone sees the identical sequence of blocks. From there it's just who taps faster and cleaner.
Live standings
A running leaderboard sits above the grid the whole match — position, name, and current level for every player, ranked live, with the current player's own row highlighted no matter where they land in the pack.
Invite a friend
Use Game Center's own invite flow — including the iMessage link — to pull a friend directly into a match for whichever mode you picked.
Forfeiting
Leaving mid-race requires a confirmation and counts as a loss, crediting the win to whoever's still racing. Finishing normally and leaving never disrupts anyone else's still-active run.
Disconnects
If an opponent's connection actually drops mid-race, the match carries on without them for everyone still playing. If it's your own connection that drops, you'll get a clear explanation on screen — never just a silent stop.
Post-match scoreboard
Once everyone's finished, a full ranked scoreboard shows final level and score for the whole match, with a one-tap rematch.
High Scores & Leaderboards
On-device high scores
Your best 10 runs per mode are kept locally, each tagged with whichever buff (if any) was active, so you can track how a strategy performs over time.
Game Center leaderboards
Global, all-time leaderboards for the modes with a win condition — each split into a "no buff" board for the purest comparison, and a "pinnacle" board open to any buff:
| Classic | Classicists no buff | Pinnacle of Classic any buff |
| Contamination | Contaminasty no buff | Pinnacle of Contamination any buff |
| Tetrilicious | Block Busters no buff | Pinnacle of Tetrilicious any buff |
| Four Squares | Foursquared no buff | Pinnacle of Four Squares any buff |
